Praises for Prof. Wilson at The Innovation Forum

Earlier this month, Prof. Wilson was invited to talk at the Arthrex Orthopaedic Technology & Innovation Forum in Naples, Florida about his exceptional work in soft tissue knee reconstruction. The talk, entitled “Multiligament GraftLink® Reconstruction with the ALL”, examined Prof. Wilson’s technique and clinical results for his combined multiligament operations simultaneously performed with a reconstruction of the anterolateral ligament (the ALL). Prof. Wilson is considered one of the world’s foremost experts in ALL reconstruction since his conception of the operation reconstruction technique in November 2013, becoming the first surgeon to ever perform an anatomical ALL reconstruction. Prof. Wilson and his colleagues, Professors Claes and Bellemans, went on to describe the technique in the world’s foremost medical journal, transforming practice worldwide with his technique rapidly becoming the norm globally due to its improved biomechanical and clinical results.

The Innovation Forum is a truly international event with delegates attending from every continent, with the Belgian delegation making a specific point of praising Prof. Wilson on his presentation, as well as his on-going commitment to Orthopaedic Research.

Professor Wilson is speaking at the ‘II Joint Preservation Congress, Warsaw, 4th to 5th September 2015’

mid 2015

Day One began with a keynote lecture in development in knee ligament surgery and discussed our contributions and advances we made to the world of knee ligament surgery, including several techniques we have now made popular worldwide.

My second lecture was in the ACL repair and presented some paediatric cases and our adult series and again this is very exciting because it allows the patients own tissue to be repair as opposed to a reconstruction, which means making a new ligament from the patients own tissue taken from elsewhere. This repair technique has also been presented this weekend to all surgeons affiliated to ESSKA (European Society of Sports Traumatology Knee Surgery & Arthroscopy) as a highlight video technique lecture and we have already been contacted by the president of ESSKA to submit this as a paper, which we are now in the process of doing. I then went on to do a live cadaveric demonstration anterolateral ligament technique (ALL) from a mobile cadaveric facility at the meeting.

In Day Two, I presented our work on osteotomy, in particular our distal femoral osteotomy series, which is now the largest followed series in the world.

Coming next is a symposium I am chairing at the HSS in New York next Monday and following this some lectures and live surgery at the Indian Arthroscopy Association meeting in Delhi later in October.

Professor Wilson's programme:

 - He is heading up a discussion panel (4th 3.00-3.20)

And is giving the following talks:

- Anatomic Translateral All-inside ACL Reconstruction (4th 4.10-4.20)

- Distal Femoral Osteotomy (5th 12.30-12.40)

- Keynote Lecture Perspective on Knee Ligaments (4th 13.40-14.00)

The launch of Mr Wilson's new ligament graft compression system

mid 2015

The compression sleeves which Mr Wilson has developed over the last 3 years were launched mid 2015

They were shown at the ISAKOS meeting and created a lot of interest from ligament surgeons all over the world. The tubes allow surgeons to compress and down size the grafts they use in ligament surgery. In doing so the surgeons are able to make smaller tunnels and therefore preserve tissue during surgery.

The Northumbria Osteotomy Master Class

21-22 June 2015

This was our first Osteotomy course in the north of England. Matt Dawson ran a fantastic 2 days course from St. James's Park.

The UK Faculty were made up by leading Osteotomy surgeons from the UK and the international faculty included Europe's leading lights in Osteotomy surgery.

Dr Robert Teitge from Detroit also joined the faculty. He gave a fantastic overview on torsional mal alignment and his experience with over 200 rotational Osteotomy procedures.

There were over 50 consultant delegates from the UK and the feedback after the course superb. The general background topics of Osteotomy were covered and 2 workshops were run to give hands on training in high tibial and distal Femoral Osteotomy surgery. We had live surgery from Konrad Sylnarski and a dedicated session on pre operative planning.

We look forward now to running the 8 th Basingstoke masterclass later in the year (December 3-4).

We firmly believe that by running these courses and presenting our excellent results following Osteotomy surgery that this excellent procedure will regain popularity in the UK and become the standard procedure for the active individual with unicompartmental arthritis.

India meeting - Live surgery

India, Delhi & MumbaiSeptember 2014

Mr Wilson was recently invited to operate in several different centres in India. He landed in Delhi on Tuesday 7th October. Having had time to deposit his bag at the hotel he was taken to the first hospital on his trip where he joined a well known Indian arthroscopic expert for a demonstration of the all inside ACL. The discussions were getting interesting following surgery but had to be cut short as Mr Wilson was then taken to another major centre in Delhi to perform two ACL reconstructions again using the all inside ACL technique on patients with a live feed to the academic centre, where a large group of Indian arthroscopic experts were watching the surgery. The procedures went extremely well and were very well received.

The following day Mr Wilson was taken to another large centre in Delhi where he again performed all inside ACL reconstructions to another large group of Indian surgeons who were again watching via live feed. Mr Wilson and his team then flew onto Mumbai on 8th October landing fairly late.

On 9th October Mr Wilson joined Dr Anant Joshi at The Sports Med Hospital where again live surgery was carried out to a large group of Indian surgeons. Mr Wilson demonstrated an MPFL reconstruction together with a tibial tubercle realignment procedure and then went on to do an all inside ACL reconstruction with an anterolateral ligament.

Mr Wilson and his team then flew down to Hyderabad for the Indian Arthroscopy Association meeting. This was a fantastic event with over twenty live surgeries carried out over a three day period. The national press were involved and there were over 700 delegates attending. On the 10th October Mr Wilson carried out a live demonstration of a MPFL reconstruction to the congress and the following day gave lectures on all-inside ACL surgery, the anterolateral ligament and then performed live surgery once more from the Novo Hospital to the congress demonstrating an all-inside ACL reconstruction with anterolateral ligament. Again this was very well received and stimulated a lot of very interesting discussion. Mr Wilson gave further lectures on meniscal repair and ACL repair and then attended the gala dinner where the visiting surgeons who made up quite a fantastic international faculty were treated to a wonderful evening of culture and fantastic Indian cuisine.

Mr Wilson returned home the following day having had a somewhat tiring but extremely exciting experience.

All-inside surgery update and two year results

Munich, GermanySeptember 2014

Mr Wilson was asked to present his two year results for all-inside ACL surgery. He is the first to present on this technique with two year data and the results were extremely positive. This was well received by the very eminent group of surgeons that had congregated in Munich for the opening of the Arthrex Research Facility based there. Mr Wilson also talked about his other on-going projects with ACL repair, compression, tri-link, all-inside PCL reconstruction and his developments in osteotomy surgery

Planning for Osteotomy Surgery

Mr Wilson was asked to present his concept and ideas on how to plan for osteotomy surgery. There was a very eminent group of surgeons who were presenting in the osteotomy session. Osteotomy really is on the rise in the UK and there is more and more interest. Given that Oxford is the home of the partial knee replacement and has only recently even considered osteotomy, has now become a very exciting new option for the surgeons in Oxford. They are doing some excellent on the epidemiology of arthritis and looking at who progresses in terms of arthritis and who would benefit from osteotomy surgery. Kristian Kley from Hanover presented the Lobenhoffer group’s experience with osteotomy which was also very well received

International Specialist Surgeons Meeting

Freiham, GermanySeptember 2014

Mr Wilson was invited to present an update on his on going research into ligament surgery. His tops included:

  • His experience with the minimally invasive All Inside Ligament surgery that he has helped to develop as a technique. He presented his excellent 2 year data on his personal series of 380 All Inside ACL procedures.
  • He also presented on his work with the new ACL procedure Trilink.
  • His compression tube project which makes ligament grafts more compact.
  • Graft Reinforcement which is Mr Wilson's concept of making grafts stronger by combining them with FibreTape to make a hybrid graft that allows quicker recovery and better strength.
  • His new minimally invasive 'Posterolateral Corner Reconstruction". This ligament is often injured as well as the ACL in a twisting injury to the knee.
  • Mr Wilson also presented his experience with the new Anterolateral Ligament surgery and in particular presented his results for the first 50 patients showing no failures. This technique has formally been published in the Mail on Sunday.
  • Mr Wilson also presented his results on ACL repair which allows much quicker recovery and again has been published in the local and national newspapers.

The North America Faculty Forum is an annual meeting attended by leading surgeons from the US who specialise in sports knee and shoulder surgery. Approximately 250 surgeons attend the meeting, which is held in Naples, Florida. The focus of the meeting is very much cutting edge and new developments in the world of knee and shoulder surgery. Mr Wilson presented his work on his modified double bundle tri-link reconstruction which has proved to be very successful clinically. Many surgeons are now adopting this for their PCL reconstructions. He also went on to present his work on reinforcing ligaments for fibre tape and again several members of the audience have been doing this now since his last presentation a year ago, particularly for PCL reconstruction. The tape acts as a splint and allows the graft or new ligament to heal without stretching.

Mr Wilson also did a surgical demonstration to the audience on a cadaveric knee demonstrating his surgical reconstruction of the anterolateral ligament. Several surgeons have contacted him since the meeting in January to say that they are now doing this routinely on their elite athletes.

Benefits Of The All Inside ACL procedure - The TransLateral Technique2012

  • Sockets are made as opposed to tunnels - so this procedure is bone preserving
  • Less soft tissue is removed to make the new ligament - this preserves strength
  • Fixation is with little buttons as opposed to large screws

It is Mr Wilson's belief and that of the team at Arthrex, that this new technique will
become the standard way that ACL reconstruction surgery is carried out and it will enable this commonly done operation to be more accurate and reproducible. This will be a very positive step for both patients and other surgeons who carry out this common operation.

The TransLateral Instruments

These include:

  • a special key hole ruler that allows the surgeon to measure and mark where the correct position is to drill the socket for the new ligament.
  • A new Radiofrequency soft tissue cleaning device called the CaliBlator
  • A specially designed aiming device for the drilling system

Faculty Forum North America  2014
